A skill development training programme on Banana Fibre Crafts was conducted for women’s groups in Karunguzhi Village, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu, during January 2026.
The programme was organized with the objective of creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural women by introducing them to the potential of banana fibre as an eco-friendly and value-added raw material. Participants were provided with practical training on processing banana fibre and transforming it into a variety of useful and attractive craft products.
The training focused on hands-on learning, enabling the women participants to understand the techniques involved in fibre preparation, basic craft-making, product finishing and value addition. The programme also highlighted the importance of utilizing agricultural residues effectively and converting them into marketable products.
Banana fibre crafts offer opportunities for income generation, women’s entrepreneurship and waste-to-wealth initiatives while promoting environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional materials.
The participants actively engaged in the practical sessions and gained knowledge that can help them develop small-scale home-based enterprises and collective livelihood activities. Such programmes can also strengthen women’s groups by encouraging entrepreneurship, skill development and local resource utilization.
The training programme reflects the continuing efforts of Ecogreenunit Foundation to promote sustainable livelihoods, women’s empowerment and the circular economy through innovative utilization of agricultural resources.
The programme demonstrated that agricultural residues such as banana fibre can become a valuable resource for rural entrepreneurship and sustainable income generation, particularly among women’s groups.
